Allenton, Derby, 2008

3.5 m dia x 0.55m. Black Granite, Cast Iron. Derby City Council.

Archer was commissioned to make this work as part of the regeneration of Allenton in Derby. It comprises a large seating ring of polished black granite. Set onto this are replicas of parts of the extraordinary 100,000 year old hippopotamus found near the site 100 years ago. The bones, now in Derby museum have been ‘returned’ to Allenton by being remade in cast iron from detailed copies made in clay and from 3D laser scans of the bones. As part of the commission Dan undertook casting workshops with local schools.
