The proposal is to build two brick towers from 3 to 5 metres in height on Gregson Green in Sleaford. These will be sculptural in form but will make reference to the Victorian Brickwork details on the Sleaford Maltings and also to the form of the Dunston Pillar near Sleaford. The structures will stand as an iconic gateway for Sleaford. Dreams play an important role in my work; here I will be recording the dreams of different groups within the community which will play discreetly in the towers on a self contained and solar powered sound system. The groups include children from the adjacent William Alvey School, the Foyer sheltered housing for teenagers and senior citizens from Elsleford Gardens. Other communities will also be invited.
The towers will then also become a portal to the parallel universe of Sleaford's dreams. The integration of the communities into the art work will engender a sense of ownership and pride in the work. The communities, spanning different generations, will also be brought together by the process and event of the recording of their dreams. Two other allied projects will enhance the community aspect of this; I am working on a parallel project for a site and community in central Turkey; community links between schools and citizens in Turkey and Sleaford could be instigated through these projects. David Groom (N. Kesteven Arts Music Development Officer) is also considering a music project where the Dream recordings (some already instigated), will form the starting point for a contemporary music commission, developed with the children at the William Alvey School - feeding back their efforts for this project into the community.
